SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE - FEATURE ARTICLE

“The duo behind the 'Tuna' shows packs up the bags (24 characters) and heads to Sin City”

LOS ANGELES TIMES

-David C. Nichols

"With a bang, a twang and a bugle bead, the third-smallest town in Texas descends on Sin City in 'Tuna Does Vegas.' ...Co-author Howard again directs with an effortless touch and just enough craft to suspend disbelief and lower defenses.

His colleagues Sears and Williams remain national treasures, switching personas to create an entire crossbred community with virtuoso ease. Favorites will vary, though the antipathy between Sears' superstitious Aunt Pearl and Williams' sanctimonious Vera Carp continues priceless. Tasty Kreme stalwarts Inita Goodwin and Helen Bedd figure in most rewardingly, ditto gun-toting, chain-smoking Didi Snavely.

New entities such as turban-wearing hotelier Anna Conda, played by Williams with equal parts Carol Channing and flugelhorn, or Sears' incongruous casino thug Shot, uphold the riotous standard." READ MORE.

ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

"While both actors have distinctive traits and styles, Sears, a beefy actor adept at big-guy (and gal) comedy, is going to remind many an audience member of John Goodman. Regardless of character, Williams' stage persona is also reminiscent of someone more famous – comedian Dana Carvey, though Williams is less manic. After years of playing Tuna characters, Williams has mastered the slow burn, especially as Vera and Didi, and is skilled at rapidly rattling off gobs of dialogue and using his voice to create vocal special effects.

Both men are adept, ventriloquist-like, at voicing one or more characters from offstage while preparing to enter as another. Adding to the show's amazement factor are the duo's slow exits, all the more deceptive considering their obviously lightning-quick costume changes (and, thanks to Linda Fisher, what fine costumes they are). The reward for their considerable efforts is our laughter at their show's lighthearted and occasionally pointed humor. And as times are tough, one can never put too high a value on that." READ MORE.

“'A Chinese man sticking needles in me is not going to calm me down!' 'Well put on some lipstick and kiss my ass!' Flawlessly delivered lines like this were aplenty in the Southern California premiere of Tuna Does Vegas at the press opening on Saturday, April 18, much to the delight of the audience. READ MORE.
